New Therapeutic Yoga Class

Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy in Manchester - a Holistic approach

My aim is to empower you to make yoga your own, so your practice can support you anytime — even when you can’t get to a class.

I'm trained in Therapeutic Yoga,  from the Svastha Yoga tradition. This is a lineage that goes from the Mohan Family in India today, directly back to Krishnamacharya.

Using a traditional holistic approach to the whole person, Yoga therapy uses the tools of yoga, such as postures (asanas), Breath (pranayama) meditation, and lifestyle guidance, to support mental, and emotional health and wellbeing.

Mapping out  10 different areas of your life, we will work together to build a personalised set of practices tailored  to your specific needs.

Meeting you where you are at, and enabling you to experience the magic of yoga from day one.

Using the breath as a powerful method to calm your nervous system and move your body, I will guide you to gently build a practice that suits your individual body and lifestyle.

With gentle breath-led movement, you’ll build a practice that supports your body, calms your nervous system, and fits naturally into your lifestyle.

Together, we will create a practice that is manageable and enjoyable for you so that you look forward to rolling out your mat and looking after yourself.

Why Yoga Therapy and not a general class?

A general class is a one size fits all and every body is individual and different.

Plus, general classes are often fitness based with all the competition to look and be a certain way and even perform.

They can often activate your nervous system instead of calm it.

Yoga Therapy is tailored  to you as an individual and can be used to treat specific conditions.

Some of the conditions that yoga therapy can help with:

  • Back pain
  • Mild scoliosis
  • Joint pain
  • Rehabilitation for frozen shoulder; rotator cuff tears
  • Mild depression and anxiety,
  • Prevention of diabetes
  • Prevention of cardiovascular conditions
  • Menopause management
  • Perimenopause symptoms
  • Digestion problems
  • disregulated nervous system

It is advisable to choose a 10 week  bundle to work with me for any of these conditions, to give it time to embed into your life and really see the difference.

At the end of five or ten sessions you will have a series of short yoga "snacks" that you can either slot into your day whenever you feel you need them, or join together to create a longer practice.

At the end of a course of therapeutic yoga, you should be feeling more calm and content and generally more happy in yourself. You will now have the tools that you need to manage chronic pain and discontent.

Other 1:1 Yoga Offerings

Yoga for Absolute Beginners

Because sometimes a general class can be a bit too full on. The pace can be too fast and you can't keep up, and you leave wondering what you've just done to yourself and feel a bit wary of going again.

I can offer a calm gentle approach suited to the person in front of me. I will always meet you where you are at. You will be given manageable postures a few at a time and build up a practice that is right for you.

Most yoga classes teach the same basic postures, just in varying order and levels of difficulty.

If you choose to learn from scratch with me, I will slowly build up a practice that allows you to confidently attend most entry level public classes.

You will gradually build strength, stability, stamina and flexibility over time so that your body gets used to the positions.

You will have time to learn about the breathing methods and learn to focus on your breath while you practice.

This way yoga can be suitable for everyone because everyone can breathe so everyone can do yoga!

Yoga For Menopause

I teach specifically designed therapeutic yoga sequences that can ease the symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes, low mood, excessive anger and lethargy.

These are short practices that target menopause symptoms using cooling  pranayama and gentle open postures to ease those hot flushes and dynamic sequences for those low energy days, targeting your unpleasant symptoms with specific gentle yoga postures to help you to feel more like yourself again.

Practicing yoga helps us to regulate the nervous system and allows you to feel more grounded and peaceful, even when the anger rises.

The sequences are short and manageable and can be made accessible for everyone.

And you can even practice from the comfort of your own home if you don't want to come out to see me. You don't have to join a regular yoga class if you don't want to.

I can zoom these classes to you.

Menopause doesn't have to be the end of your life. It's just a new transition. So embrace it, find your creativity and use yoga to ease the symptoms.

I recommend a course of five sessions so that you can learn different postures for the different symptoms.

You need these tools in your toolbox. Yoga really helps.

1:1 Ashtanga Yoga

Sometimes  you can't get to a regular class, and you'd just like a bit of teacher input.

Sometimes a little individual attention can really help to overcome those stuck areas of your practice.

A 1:1 Ashtanga class is ideal for adapting your practice through injury, pregnancy, menopause, or for developing and refining your existing practice.

It's helpful to work with a teacher when you're pregnant so that you know best how to modify the postures to accommodate your growing bump. And yes, of course you can still practice Ashtanga when you're pregnant, It makes for a chilled child!

Having help to adapt your practice around injury will allow you to heal properly and caretake your practice without giving up completely. It'll allow you to carefully build strength to support your injury without hurting it more.

Having guidance to adapt your practice for menopause is also helpful. So much drops off at this time and it can feel like you've had to let it all go, but working with an experienced teacher who has still practiced through her menopause really helps. It allows you to keep your practice.

I have 28 years of personal daily practice and 14 years of teaching experience so I fully understand these postures and how they present in a normal body. I practiced through pregnancy, injury and menopause, so understand how to modify effectively when needed, and the beneficial effects that the practice can have when approached carefully.

I have experienced the transformative power of yoga, and how beneficial and supportive it can be for your life.
